UNITAS a film by Kostis Bassogiannis, References

The Midpoint and Central Scene of UNITAS
Based on Three Masterpieces

"Pulp Fiction" by Quentin Tarantino (1994)

"Faces" by John Cassavetes (1968)

The overdose scenes of Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" and John Cassavete's "Faces", gave me the first initiative to make my own version of a tough tradition beginning with Otto Preminger's "The Man With the Golden Arm" back in 1955.

In UNITAS the scene of Lily's crisis comes after a sex scene in which the couple, once more in their miserable life, really experiences the sentimental and existential gap of atomism. They are functional UNITS of a UNITY of morons. Their dreams have been practically UNIFIED in the hunt of a fancy substance which gives them their vital falsehood. I painted this powder orange-red, to differentiate it from a simple narcotic, to make it a coloured symbol of the UNIFICATION of the idiotic parts of a machinery world.

The style, the atmosphere and some traces of Chris and Lily's characters come to show up in Lily's Crisis Scene in about the middle of the film. But this scene could not have been done by me and the two excellent actors I had the fortunate opportunity to direct, if these three extraordinary masterpieces didn't exist.
